Bio
Maya Sumile graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from James Madison University in the spring of 2025. She is currently attending American University to pursue her Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art, where she has received the Ruth Meixner-Bird Scholarship and College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Research Awards. The most recent show she has been included in is Free Music: The Illusion of Liberation, a six month long exhibition curated by Khadija Jamila at the Eaton House in Washington, DC.

Artist Statement
In imagined worlds constructed as sanctuaries of self reflection, where does performance demand truth? My work reinvents my past and present circumstances as fantastical narratives through oil painting, fiber processes, and sculpture. By disguising these stories through symbolism and archetypal references, I create dreamlike portrayals of home and identity.
